There
are around 17,625 colleges in India affiliated to 342 universities all over the
country. Not to mention the growing number of technical institutes and foreign funded
organisations that specialise in career-oriented courses. There are 18 centrally
funded universities and 95 deemed universities (accorded university status) all
over the country.
The higher education or college system in India is principally divided into three
levels:
- Bachelor/Undergraduate level
- Master?s/Postgraduate level
- Doctoral/Pre-doctoral level
- Diploma courses are available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels,
.
A Bachelor?s Degree programme in Arts, Sciences or Commerce is a three-year
course. Most colleges also offer Honors in the same. An Honors in a stream implies
a more in-depth study of the subject. The same degree in medical or technical courses
like Medicine (MBBS), Engineering (BE), Pharmacy (B.Pharm), Dentistry (BDS), Architecture
(B.Arch) or Veterinary Sciences (may entail five or more years of study, including
internship.
The Master?s program is of two years' duration and normally does not
include research or thesis work. Regular courses may require an entrance, depending
on the university you apply to. However, for admission to Engineering or Medical,
one has to clear the CET (Common Entrance Test).
The Pre-doctoral program (also called M. Phil) is done after the completion
of Master?s. One may be required to submit a thesis or it could also be course-based
work. A Ph. D. or Doctorate in Philosophy is earned two years post M. Phil, and
is essentially based on the submission of an intensively researched thesis.
