now you are probably conversant with which college has the best computer lab and
the best canteens around town. And you also know where to get the cheapest rates
for your course books and movie-halls with the best Dolby system.
But before you are up and about, let us remind you that unless your Hindi
is comprehensible enough, sign language won't get you too far in India!
Basically speaking, we have here a small compilation of everyday lingo
which should see you through the day.
Numerals are
- 1 = “ek”, 2 = “doe”,
3 = “teen”, 4 = “char”, 5 = “paanch”, 6 = “chah”, 7 = “saat”, 8 = “aath”,
9 = “nau”, 10 = “das”.
Money is “paisa”,
Rupees is “rupaiya”.
- “Yes” : “ha”
- “No” : “nahi”
- “Please” : “kripya”
- “Thank you” : “dhanyavaad”
or “shukariya”
- “Sorry” : “shamma kare”
- “Goodbye” : “alvida”
or “namaste”
- Greetings like “Hello/
Hi” : Traditionally “Namaskar”or “Namaste” but Hello and Hi are equally popular.
- “How are you?” “What
is your name?”: “aap kaise hain?”/ “aapka naam kya hai?”
- “Where do you stay?”
: “ kahan rehte hain?”
- “Where are you going?”
“What is the name of this place?”: “ aap kahan jaa rahe hain?”/ “is jagah ka naam
kya hai?”
- “How much?” “Do you
know the way?”: “kitne huway?”/ “raasta pata hai?”
- “Give me water” “Give
me food”: “humko paani doe”/ “humko khana doe”
